what makes having information "hidden between the lines" in a piece of writing good and failing to do so bad?

is there actually anything wrong with being straight forward, or is subtext just "fan service" for critics and self proclaimed intellectuals and academics to circle jerk over and pat them selves on the back for noticing?

What are the greatest crime/mystery novels of the period from the 90s to the early 2000s? Basically the time when technology was rapidly advancing and the world was "modern" but the internet as we know it now didn't exist, smartphones didn't exist, laptops were uncommon, VHS and CD were still relevant, etc. Especially looking for murder mysteries of that era.

2. You don't need police to protect you either
3. Looting stores and burning buildings is a good thing
