To add on to this. One of my favorite writers Osamu Dazai was raised really wealthy, but he ended up destitute as an adult because he was horrible with money (and kept doing shit to alienate himself from his family until they finally cut him off). And that resulted in one of his best works, No Longer Human

What kind of stories do you like?

One of my favorite books is No Longer Human by Osamu Dazai, but while a fairly easy read in English translation, it is also quite dark. So it may or may not be something I would recommend.

Is the Junji Ito adaptation of this worth reading? How similar is it to the source material?

It felt so unfinished. I was already at the end when I thought I was at the very beginning. Was listening to the audiobook a mistake? The narrator seemed too serious. It feels like a black comedy.

I don't know why but I was hooked up by it. And I can't seem to replicate that feeling any longer.

No Longer Human and also Confessions of a Mask. Not so much in the lives the characters lived but in the thoughts they had and how they reacted to the world around them.

>can't recount last time I felt something pleasant
>being referred to another psychologist
I was thinking of reading this book but i'm wondering: is this that type of book that hapless normies gawk at or is it that type of book that pushes people over the ledge?
What am I getting into?

I'm not sure what to think of this book. It's certainly introspective and well-written, but I just can't relate to the main character. And now in the way you might think. I picked up the book because I thought I'd relate to him, but I found myself getting quite annoyed by Yozo. I fundamentally find it difficult to see how exactly he's disqualified as a human being. Why is he so angsty when he has women, a job and friends? I wanted to like the book, but this question is just too large in my mind. Someone explain to me how I'm supposed to feel sympathy for a man who had everything but squandered it completely and fucked over several people. I must be missing something.

deep rotted fear of humans from very young age. Yet people he met were all "low lifes" with even worse conditions than him. The only difference between them and him was the fact he couldn't cope with his fear or even put a fight.
And in the end he really couldn't. Ended up broken forever.

How do you not end up like him? How does one defeat such fear.

Read the first half of this after finishing steppenwolf and being somewhat underwhelmed. Seems good but I’m just a brainlet.
