A lot of blogs tend to have that antiquated "Web 2.0" mid-2000's aesthetic to them (same with forums), which has a kitschy and gimmicky feel to it. Think Windows Vista: it's not as iconic as 95 or XP, but not as modern as Windows 10. It's somewhere in between, it tries to imitate OS X's refined design, but only comes across as a mess that has glossy elements on it.

There's some examples here on what I mean: https://jonathannicol.com/blog/2006/10/21/the-visual-design-of-web-20/
Modern design trends are more about minimal and flat elements.
