I want to know what people think about when there is nobody around. Somehow whenever I try to get at this sort of thing in conversation I get the sense that people answer defensively. Or in an uncertain manner. Think of the long passages in Ulysses that sweep a spotlight across long arcs in the minds of Bloom and Dedalus. When your friends, co-workers or lovers are walking alone on a beach or on the way to buy a fat, juicy kidney, what do they think about?
