I really enjoy versification as an exercise. It is good for the brain. It also makes things fun to read. When you must read to children, rhyming can help, especially readers who might not be gifted orators. Suddenly, through meter and other devices and patterns the text is alive even in the dullards uttering, even they can hear it. To wonder whether a theme or structure - traditional or otherwise - is preferable is to consider a real vexing problem, but ultimately if its wholly in the abstract and not applicable to a creative effort you and producing, who cares? What would a response to your questions even mean? What would it instruct or clarify? You should be writing, OP. Write lots of poetry and discover for yourself. What else could there be?
