it is by far the best execution of the archetypical fantasy story (village shmuck's journey to defeat the dark lord) and it speaks to WoTs quality that the story is actually enjoyable and not boring dogshit. Its not my favorite series but its easily in my top 5

imo both tolkien and modern fantasy differ quite a bit tone-wise from the trappings of 'generic' fantasy, so whenever I encounter a more conventional fantasy setting (or a parody of one) it is mainly WoT that I find myself comparing it to. So if I have skewed view on the importance of the series, thats why

imo this is a big part of why interest in books is falling. it turns out most middle and high schools students couldn't care less about small town racism in the 30s or the biography of some pakistani refugee

Its not like cinema and television are exclusive to boys. both my brother and my sister are equally disinterested in reading, and they never talk about books with their friends either.
