I assume they teach this wet-fart of a definition in American high-schools??

Conservatism as a cohesive, mature ideology developed in opposition to the french revolution. Its got nothing to do with conserving the environment etc. It was an anxious reaction to the potential "leveling" effects of liberalism and aimed to conserve existing power structures and practises (legal, political, economic)
