Just kind of a thought, not against this practice, but a lot of times it seems immediately obvious when someone does it in a way thats almost solely for surfacelevel ethos, or just repeating what has already been said for the sole purpose of being heard saying it. And I dont think ethos itself is a bad thing. but using it as a blunt object is kind of fart sniffing. maybe its the difference between aphorism and honest communication. a lot of philosophers in a way are masters of rhetoric, and you can condense a complex, or somewhat abstract sensation in to a well known (in the field) verse. like “I know that I know nothing”. but i think there is a difference between paroting a “deep” quote because it is deep and using it effectively as a tool to communicate a point.

like its the difference between the Humian concept of “impressions” and “ideas” (yes I know I am doing it now). where the latter simply states a static image whose value is in its notoriety and the former intends to use it as a modality of elucidating a train of thought using it as a tool rather than an ends in itself.

idk if i am explaining it well, and in plainer speech i think there is a difference between kind of petty namedropping, and a more honest utilization of a philosophers words (this probably applies to other spheres of study/interest too)
