Are any of the Metro books by Dmitry Glukhovsky any good? I enjoyed the games but never read the books are they worth the read?

I'm currently reading the novel Metro 2033. I've watched all the walkthroughs of the video game seeing how they compare to each other. Not totally finished with book yet but so far pick up the atmosphere in the video game correct . The main plot of the story is in intact although it deviates. What's your view /lit/?

Has anyone here read Metro 2033 and or Metro 2034?
I recently played the games and I really liked the setting so now I'm interested in reading them.
If the books happen to be shit then what would you recommend that has either a similar setting or theme?

Goddamn this was a good read! Why doesn't /lit/ talk about it all that much? It certainly deserves more acclaim.

Folks always tend to overlook this one. And if you haven't played the games based on 'em, you should. Pretty fucking good.

I read Metro 2033 recently. Very questionable in my opinion. First of all the average Nazi soldier was not a cruel person, except in this novel they are. In the movie they would probably have scars on their faces, like the typical German boy grown up to be forced into the army. But you need the bad guys so you got the Nazis and the commies, fair enough. But one of the guards killing a autistic kid? I suppose it could have happened if the guard were cruel enough, but here is were my suspension of disbelief broke.

Artyom is on the most important mission of his life. It determines the life of his home station. So at that point he decides to kill the guard as revenge for the autistic kid. What the fuck. He gets sent to prison. No one would do that if they had bigger ambitions on the mind.

But the good communists save him. Then you realize that no matter what the main character does wont matter because there are no consequences to what he does.

Bad book for fundamental reasons. No wonder he was rejected.
