Maybe the fact that it causes such a visceral reaction reveals that there is some truth in it? I'm just speculating. Freud said something about absent fathers and homosexuality, but a lot of his theories seem pretty wacked out. Maybe that's a good place to start? I don't know, I've never read him. Definitely read Plato's Symposium you haven't already. People say Mishima's Confessions of A Mask is good literature from a gay perspective.
