Personally I'm of the opinion that in post-9/11 america the only political change will be glacial and highly managed. This whole protest thing would have spawned a major political response in the 1960s for example, but instead it spawned a bunch of new management strategies and corporate consulting circuits.
Which is what it was initially conceived as, this isn't a bug but a feature. The populace is literally incapable of the violence (even the emotional violence) needed to bring about a substantive change. We're strapped in for a couple centuries of this type of diplomatic sparring over micro-goals with other geopolitical superpowers and corporate-governmental conglomerates trying to manage us like serfs ie fucking us over just enough that we don't kill ourselves en masse.
None of the coming eschatons are anything but escapist fantasies, it can always get worse. Fat mans rule number one I think.
