Try Sei Shonagon's Pillow Book by penguin classics. They spell out the poetic meanings and refernces. It's essentially a culture of lit freaks constantly trying to one up each other, you would think /lit/ would love it. I started to read the poery that the Japanese classics refered to just so I can keep up. Waka poerty is magically once you get it.
