It's a deliberate misinterpretation of stoicism that he used to make a point, as Nietzsche often did. Stoicism isnt a tyranny over the self, it's seeing things as they are so you dont have so much pent up angst that you act in a detrimental manner.

Read the stoics too, almost all of them were involved in politics. Of course they were trying to better things.

The Diyonissian approach to life is just the other side of the same coin that reason finds itself on; they are one in the same at the end of the day. Dealing with a life in a world that is greater than you, and doesn't care about you, in a manner that is mentally healthy and sustainable.
