I'm trying to get into this, but it comes across as bitterly juvenile to me. Comparatively, American individualists like Emerson or Thoreau advocate an anti-nomianism that is inflected by a sense of wonder and an appreciation of beauty; a looking-forward to what is possible. What I get from Stirner is a resentful 'I know u are but wat am I' vibe, with its total substancelessness obfuscated by Hegelian jargon.
I'd attribute this to differences in nationality and the corresponding differences in general attitudes towards institutions on account of the nature of those institutions at their time and place, but Nietzsche and even idealists like Schelling still have a sense of wonderment, albeit one more contemplative, pessimistic, and historical. What the fuck is Stirner's problem? What do people see in this work?

Sax Mtirner says that higher ideas restrict the individual and are therefore shit (Feel free to correct me if I misinterpreted what he was saying).

Why are they shit, especially if I may have created the higher idea and why is sacrificing my autonomy for this higher ideal bad?Why do I have to be "my own man", what the fuck does that achieve because I fail to see the value of just being Independent and no, I'm not into pegging nor do I accept religious/pollitical dogmas.Nietzsche has just one uped this edgelord by creating an end goal for the independent man.

Please, refute me and point out the flaws in my reasoning.

For the love of (((god))) does anyone have this version of the ego and its own as an epub, I have the pdf but its a scan so I can barely read what it says. And yes, I've tried converting it to epub but it doesn't convert it to digital text.

Info: Cambridge University edition, edited by David Leopold

What if anything is a a must read before starting Stirner? I've already read the Greeks. Also is pic related worth reading in German? I was good at German in school but doubt its up to the standard of reading something like this is it worth brushing up on to read it in German? Or would i be better of in English were i will undoubtedly understand it better?

Can we have a sincere spook thread?

I gave in to my spooks and bought The Ego and Its Own. I like what I've read so far. However, how does Stirner address the fact that we may not know what we truly want, or that we may want something that is in fact a spook?

One example he uses early on is a girl choosing between her lover and her family ties, but is torn because she values them both. Stirner concedes that she may desire maintaining her family stability but says that's rooted in piety, which is a spook. Therefore, she should choose the lover because that is more fulfilling for her ego.

I see the reasoning behind this but I'm not entirely convinced. What do you do when a spook has convinced you that you are happy? What happens when the totality of the spook means that it's in your best interest to keep it?

Take modern consumerism. I have the spook that luxury products will make me happy. In today's society, isn't that kind of true? Having nice clothes and a nice car etc. elevates your social status and makes people respect you more. I realize that those are spooks in themselves. But when those spooks are capable of determining whether we starve or dine nicely, experience love and affection or contempt, feel self-respect or self-loathing, isn't it in the ego's best interest to keep the spooks?

Help me /lit/. I'm seeing spooks everywhere and not sure what to do with all of them.
