>I mean, rarely if ever do I see books about "the secrets, joys and experience of being a man" and when I do they are usually marketed to gays.

The basic reason for this is obvious. The main difference between men and women lies in their socialization patterns. You rarely see books about the secrets and joys of being a man. How often do you see professional athletics (with all-male teams) written about, broadcast about, promoted, etc? While you're playing football, women are spending 5 hours in each others' company talking talking talking nonstop as a means of low-grade competition AND conflict resolution at the same time. Women therefore require a constant stream of social cues in order to tell them how to behave. Women's fiction or chick lit (from Sam Richardson and Jane Austen to the present day) is all about giving women rules for behavior (especially about when to give herself to a man) since women's behavior is judged socially in a way that men's behavior (except in the context of team sports) is not.

Okay then. This is undoubtedly /lit/ related.
