In the books magic doesn’t really exist, it’s just deceptive rituals and such, but supernatural events do occur such as visions of the future and apparitions of old heroes. It’s a more grounded approach to fantasy that relies less on sorcery and more on willpower and immanence.

pic related is one of my favorites; the protagonist is a headstrong girl badger, so depending on her disposition she might even relate.

as for (1), maybe find a graphical-novelization of Transformers 2. (3) might could get into a dumbed-down version of 'the odyssey'.
