I am currently working through Tolstoy's Magnum Opus, and I am having a problem. I am currently at around page 600, but I am bored out of my mind. The "war part" is simply boring the hell out of me. While most people seem to dislike the war parts, I enjoyed them up until this one. I am more interested in seeing Bolkonsky's pursuit of "vengeance" on Prince Anatole.

I am tempted to just skim through the section until I get back to the peace times.

Do any of you guys struggle during these somewhat boring war parts?

How do we combat the tyranny of P&V translations?

Am I missing something? I know you shouldn't spend time reading something you aren't enjoying but I've read longer and more difficult books than this, but 400 pages in and I just can't get in to it.

I'm aware that just because it's a classic doesn't mean I have to like it, but considering how much I like many other established classics I'm surprised I'm not enjoying this one. I've got as far as the duel and that was quite a captivating moment, but beyond that I've been struggling.

Is it a slow burn that gets better or is this book simply not for me?

Thanks.

Hi /lit/, I was wondering if it's okay to skip the french in War and Peace?
I have the P&V translation and the french translations are footnotes; I'd really only want to bother with them if I knew they were necessary.

How hard of a read is this for someone who doesnt know anything about the French invasion of Russia, or anything about Russian history in general? What kind of prep do I need to do for this book?

Awesome, thanks for the help guys, I'll definitely pick it up sooner rather than later now.

Also is the P&V translation as bad as everyone says it is? I bought the p&v version a while ago before I heard all the hate for it but I'd go for a different one if it's that bad.

ITT books that everyone knows of but no one has actually read, except you actually did and have no one to talk about it with.

What's the 'best' translation, and by that I mean the one that doesn't sound like a Russian giving English a try after 2 courses at his local community center.
