Books where the main character stops being an egoistic, prententious, know-it-all douchebag? Stuff like Flowers For Algernon or some of those Flannery O'Connor stories in "Everything That Rises Must converge."

You guys, I'm at kind of a rough patch in life. I'm not as successful as I thought I'd be in my career or personal life and just kind of floundering. My friends hang out with me as an obligation more than because they actually like me, and I live a pretty lonely, boring life - but not because I actually want it, more like because I'm afraid to appear dumb, uncool, or boring. It sucks. Any advice or lit recommendations?

Just finished this book and gotta say, I loved it and loathed it at the same time.
The inner monologue of the protagonist seemed horribly drawn out at some points...as if it was written as a stream of consciousness, sort of like Kerouac's Tristessa.
Thoughts/opinions on this novel?

I've just recently gotten into reading regularly for pleasure and was recommended pic related.

I don't know what it was, but I didn't think a book could crush me as much as this did. Dat last page..

Any recs on more like this?
