Why didn't Mr. Owens (the restaurant owner who was shot by Black Jackson) just shut the fuck up and let the gang sit where they were? I'm not saying they were right to murder him but he should have easily been able to tell they were not reasonable people. He would still be alive if he wasn't so fucking autistic. Glanton even warned him there wasn't a chance in hell that they were going to change their seating arrangement.

Rereading Blood Meridian and more and more keeps unfolding before me. I noticed that in Chapter 2 the kid hears about Bexar from the cattle drovers and they tell the kid that Bexar has a reputation for whoring and drinking and sin. The kid immediately decides to head there next. Then, at the end of the book, the man hears about Griffin, a town with the same reputation, and immediately goes there too. What do you McCarthy meant by this? I think he was showing that the man hadn't really changed despite his experiences. His experiences as a witness to and participant in Glanton's gang may have scarred him, but it hardly changed his behavior. He seemed to be basically the same person, just shellshocked and with no more understanding of the world and its mysteries (also alluded to by the hermit in chapter 2). At most, he was able to sort of reject the judge in the end despite ultimately succumbing to him.

Is the judge God, Satan, or just an ordinary man who found that the "thread of order" was guns and twelve year olds?

Why didn't Glanton piss with everyone else at the volcano? Tobin said he was the only one who didn't help make peepee bullets.

This really is not in the same league as Moby Dick. It feels very contrived, artificial. I have no problem with darker, cynical stuff, but this makes me want to laugh at times.

I guess having first hand experience of your subject matter makes all the difference. Or maybe cynicism is just lame these days.

I dropped it halfway through. I just got too bored. McCormac's complicated prose just isn't pleasant enough to force myself to grind through and I just didn't find the story compelling enough to justify finishing the book.

Am I retarded ?
I just marathoned the first chapter of this and I didn't understand anything except the judge/priest scene and that fight which apparently started because that dude stole the kids boots.

It feels like a written action movie where you don't have time to think with 100 cuts every minute.
