Sounds like a good time. I just read The Death of Ivan Ilyich a month ago, it was depressing but good.

Are there any good books that are entirely like the first chapter of Slaughterhouse Five?

I've heard a lot of people say that this book changed their lives or completely transformed their outlook on life. Did any of you have this experience or do you know anyone who did? What is it about this book that makes people feel that way? I read it, enjoyed it and thought it was quite funny but I didn't really find it to be all that profound or life altering. Maybe I'm missing something.

What does /lit/ think of Slaughterhouse-Five? I just finished it, and I think it might be one of my favorites. I think Billy Pilgrim is the best literary character I've ever read about.

Also, what's your interpretation of the Tralfamadorians? Was it real or is it just Billy going insane toward the end of his life? I'm more for the latter.

Considering that EVERYONE should read it, it cant be too complicated.

So I will go with Slaughterhouse 5, because its very accessible even to people who arent that smart and I think it really does instill a good amount of interesting ideas in the reader.

I just completed Kurt Vonnegut's novel, Slaughterhouse-Five, and am currently writing an essay on it and I would like feedback regarding a thesis that will do this book justice. So far I have:
What can one truly say about the atrocious acts of violence committed during the second world war? “...All there is to say about a massacre, things like Poo-tee-weet” (Vonnegut, 19). In Slaughterhouse-Five by Kurt Vonnegut, the author proclaims, through various satirical undertones, the absurdity of war through the depiction of the character Edgar Derby using him as the crux of the novel to also highlight the inevitability of such events, like the firebombing of Dresden.

Thoughts? Any critique is appreciated. Thank you all very much, big fan of this board.

Is this worth reading or is it just hype? Also what are some other books I should look into or that you would suggest? I have some free time off work and need to read something.

So did aliens actually abduct him and is that why he's unstuck in time?

Or is he imagining it all in his head and basing what he believes off things he takes subconciously from his real life?
Because I think both arguments can be made.

or does it not matter.
