Why does Germany have such a paltry literary tradition?
There's basically nothing until The Enlightenment and even after that, most of what they produced was Philosophy.
The Grimm Brothers, who only compiled stories, and Franz Kafka, who wasn't German, are probably the only German-language authors widely known outside of Germany.
