Iliad, Odyssey, Aeneid, Nibelungenlied, Mahabharata, Divine Comedy, Paradise Lost the list goes on but a question remains, where is the modern epic? The defining literary piece of a culture? Why do they no longer exist? what happened to them?

What are your favorite epic poems? National epics?

How come the Song of the Nibelungs isn't as popular as the Iliad? I've been reading it recently and I'm really captured by it.

This also leads to another question, do you think it would benefit to teach more Germanic (Norse, Anglo-Saxon, High German) works in schools? Like, I know Beowulf is taught a lot, but if we're having kids read epic poems, why not have them read some other works.
