>Asked about novelist David Foster Wallace, who took his own life in 2008, but who has a new book out, “The Pale King: An Unfinished Novel,” put together from manuscript chapters and files found in his computer, Bloom says, “You know, I don’t want to be offensive. But ‘Infinite Jest’ [regarded by many as Wallace’s masterpiece] is just awful. It seems ridiculous to have to say it. He can’t think, he can’t write. There’s no discernible talent.”

>It’s all a clear indication, Bloom notes, of the decline of literary standards. He was upset in 2003 when the National Book Award gave a special award to Stephen King. “But Stephen King is Cervantes compared with David Foster Wallace.

Is Steven King Cervantes compared with David Foster Wallace?

We let him down. On the day Harold Bloom died, I walked into my senior Shakespeare seminar with a noticeably downcast face. My professor, a kindly old Jewess, asked me what was the matter, and I demurred, for I knew (as she had assigned an essay of Bloom's on The Taming of the Shrew in another class some years previously) that she did not think very highly of his abilities as a scholar or his attitude towards the canon and the School of Resentment. Nonetheless, I was unable to participate much in class that day, which was another failure on my part, since the other students spent the two and a half hour period criticizing Shakespeare for being racist towards Caliban.

Reminder that no one, NOT ONE person on this board is intellectually serious enough to engage with Bloom and gain something from the experience. Everyone here either memes on him or looks up to him in some kind of faggot "anti-postmodernist" way, as a defender of the canon against feminists and other imaginary enemies. Almost no one has the brainpower and the knowledge to read even his most basic works (Anxiety of Influence or essays on Shakespeare) and comprehend them; the few who might actually be able to understand him are understandable turned off by the idiots spouting memes and stay away.
