Is the Kid's poetry supposed to be awful?

Once again I am disappointed by a book I randomly picked up. Hopefully pic related is decent, I've seen it recommended a couple of times.

Finished this in about 10 days after giving up once before. I'd recommend it, it's hard to describe though. Basically it's about a mentally unstable man who doesn't know his own name, he travels to a city in the midwest called Bellona which has been turned into a depopulated husk after an unknown cataclysm.

I just finished this. Is this book meant to induce the experience of mental illness in normal people?

Is it any good?

The only reason Dhalgran wasn't canonized on the level of Gravity's Rainbow was because Delany has the science fiction genre label.

I saw pic related recommended on /lit/ a while ago. It appears to be an 800 page crazy psychedelic novel, is there anything similar that the author wrote that's shorter so I can get a taste for it first?

Example being the tone shift in the last third of Dhalgren. Not looking for horror itself because the genre is full of hack frauds.

I hear this book is a supreme masterpiece

its complexity makes Ulysses look like a beginners book or something that..just the sheer amount of ideas in it

Boroughs?

Just finished and holy shit was it great. I need some recommendations for 'new wave' sci-fi or just science fiction that focuses on sexuality, spirituality or just has a more complex emotional spectrum. I'm picking up Michael Moorcock's Jerry Cornelius novels which seem fun.
