What happened to New Atheism?

Why did edgelord atheism peak around 2010 and then gradually die out?

Now that the dust has settled and with the benefit of hindsight (into what came after), I think it's fair to say the new atheists received a stronger backlash than deserved.

Do you see the problem? Many atheists form and defend their position in a state of pride as “natural men,” with certain attitudes about the sufficiency of relying on their own understanding, and attitudes toward God. Their knowledge is darkened, their wisdom is in reality foolishness, in vain they try to see the supernatural through the natural. They don’t care about purifying their heart, avoiding sin, or questioning their ability to judge God as they are. They’re like swine, unable to look up to the sky, mistakenly thinking that there’s no evidence for the sky, when they simply cannot turn their heads up to see it.

The true swine will hear these words I’m saying, and simply do as he’s always done, and demand proof of this or that. But how do you expect to see the proof?

Can someone tell me what the New Atheists actually achieved philosophically speaking to merit the title "intellectual"? Seems to me that their whole shtick boils down to "I'm so smart because I know the earth is round."
I mean if these people can be called intellectuals for destroying religion then I can be called world heavyweight boxing champ for beating up little kids in a park.
