Yeah he wrote almost exclusively in short stories which have been loosely categorized into cycles if they deal with similar things. Some of his writing has elements of sci-fi, some of it has elements of horror, some of it has elements of fantasy. The genre is kind of labeled 'weird tales' which is kind of a cross roads between the three genres and has an emphasis on the weird, strange, and macabre.

It's not a series. H.P Lovecraft wrote short stories almost exclusively, partly because the only people that would publish him at the time were pulp magazines and partly because he believed that horror was best suited in short stories and very hard if not impossible to write in novel format. Although his short stories can be grouped around similar things and themes into what are loosely dubbed 'cycles' like the Dreamlands cycle there is no real order to them although some are better than others.

Lovecraft if your into horror/weird tales. The way he structures his stories to build horror and suspense, and the way he slowly reveals information to develop a feeling of dread atmosphere is amazing.

He's the other cornerstone of modern horror besides Poe.

If your new to him though buying an anthology of his stories will probably be best though as it'll have the core good ones which are really all the ones you need unless you want to read everything he's written or really get into him.
