I'm looking for an expansive history of Western "classical" music that covers movements, composer biographies, and stylistic elements for the complete novice. Basically, I just want to be able to appreciate classical music and know composers in the same way I know books and their authors. Kind of like "A History of Western Philosophy" type deal but for music. Any recommendations?
