What books should I read that make me less elitist, /lit/?

Lately I've sort of been making peace with the ignorance of the masses and it's a good feel. I can relax. What works have made you more tolerant of other peoples tastes, opinions and level of sophistication?

Yes, the lowest common denominator will probably be even lower if it is a global/wider affair. On the other hand we have a far more accessible space for niche stuff because of the internet. That said, I don't blame either Mickey D's or Beiber for fulfilling a need that's already there. In earlier days it might have been watery gruel and simplistic folk songs. Plebs gonna pleb.
