where to start with Bertolt Brecht? how readable are his plays in German? (I'm learning German and I want to start reading German books)

For me? It's the collected plays of Bertolt Brecht: intelligent, nihilistic, and with a wicked sense of humor. But seriously, read them, they're great.

So I am reading Mother Courage and Her Children by Bertolt Brecht this week for my Modern and Contemporary Drama class (we just finished Strindberg, Ibsen, Shaw, and O'Neill) and I was wondering what /lit/ thinks of Brecht? I have never read him and am only familiar with him in relation to the Frankfurt School and other Marxists. Is he a good playwright? After him we're onto Beckett (who's one of my personal favourites).

Why is marxism so artistically sterile? Could anyone name 5 explicitly marxist writers who are considered good by people besides other marxists?

Why does /lit/ hate Brecht nowadays?

What are the go-to recordings of Brecht? Something like "Beckett directs Beckett".

Why is post-WW2 German /lit/ so crappy?

So why do so many consider Brecht to be the God of 20th century drama, again? I've read him in German and while he obviously has an ear for the language, his basic bitch "political commentary" and insistence on blunt didacticism ruins it all. The Verfremdungseffekt is just gimmicky. Why did someone so clearly talented have to be so thoroughly spooked?

What does /lit/ think of Bertolt Brecht? Specifically the play The Spy and the poem The Solution? And is he relevant?
