I'm not a socialist, you don't have to convince me that they have their own insidious goals, but this is clearly not a "side effect" of capitalism anymore.
Capitalism's only goal, the real telos of it, is endless expansion of the cycle of production and consumption. Anything else will eventually be an impedance to this, and it will eventually be subsumed as the cycle furthers its own ends. It finished discarding moral imperatives as useless over a century ago. By the end of the 60s it had already absorbed rebellion against itself and turned it into a fully-predicted-for, fully-planned part of its own system. The 21st century will see it finish that same process with the entire concept of a person's identity.
These aren't little aberrations, small things we can tweak to fix. This is the system becoming more efficient at reaching the goal it's always had.

I genuinely cannot understand how anybody can look around at the modern west and say "Damn, those commies have completely destroyed society. If only we had more capitalism to fix this." It requires a level of delusion I really can't fathom.

The truth is what the other anon was getting at: large capitalist interests support a watered-down identity politics with a thin veneer of revolutionary spirit that, when you really look at it, doesn't change anything more significant than the labels outside bathrooms. They get people to fly into such a fucking rage over meaningless horseshit like that that /pol/, the only outsiders detached enough to maybe look and say hey something's wrong here, made themselves into larping nazi faggots worshipping a billionaire too senile to tie his own shoes, and they became a joke with no credibility. Why? Not because of communism. Communism is a brand now, radicalism is a demographic.
