Just finished the book and never watched the movie.

I always heard that this story was depressing, sad and violent. A swirl of hopelessness sprinkled with despair. There were suggestions that every rabbit killed themselves, or died in a battle or something to do with cannibalism. So I was never quite interested in reading such a story, especially from an animals perspective.

Now that I read it...wtf was everyone talking about? This is a story about hope and character hardening. It's optimistic, everything ends well. A handful of nameless, faceless rabbits die in an offhand prose. When bigwig was trapped in the snare, I thought 'oh shit, this is where it starts happening' but he made it out, in fact, that was almost more gruesome than any death in the book.

Did I miss something, am I desensitized, what is going on? It's not a sad book in any way. Then I read that it was intended as a childrens story! I wish I read this earlier. A lot earlier.

Really just the last 10% is functionally different, and like all of Hugo's work, much of the book is not related to the plot but to tangents that you have no emotional connection to.

Dark childrens books made into dark movies thread? I hate that disney puts a positive spin on everything, and I dread the inevitable call of the wild move.

Sort of cheating since it's an adaptation
