Literally all of the pre-Socratics—it's honestly so fucking embarrassing reading what they unironically believed lmao.
Thank God for Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle!

Can anyone give me a short introduction and some secondary sources about Parmenides, and his metaphysics? Especially concerning his pluralist (in opposition to a monist) epistemology.

Hello friends. I'm finally doing it: I'm starting with the Greeks, specifically with the pre-Socratics. Doing so seems prudent for understanding the full breadth of Greek thought, and to prepare me for the works of Plato and Aristotle. I'd like to know which thinkers are required reading and which are extraneous of the Loeb Library's 9 volumes on the Early Greeks, which survey the following thinkers:

Pherecydes
Thales
Anaximander
Anaximenes

Xenophanes
Heraclitus

Pythagoras
Hippasus
Philolaus
Eurytus
Archytas
Hicetas
Ecphantus

Parmenides
Zeno
Melissus
Empedocles
Alcmaeon
Hippo

Anaxagoras
Archelaus
Diogenes of Apollonia

Leucippus
Democritus

Protagoras
Gorgias
Socrates
Prodicus
Thrasymachus
Hippias

Antiphon
Lycophron
Xeniades

>therefore the motion that we see all the time in the world is an illusion
Was Parmenides retarded? Serious question.

Why are ideas like God and the afterlife so controversial? They are both essentially questions and answers to the unanswerable most important parts of being. A. What is the ultimate explanation for being? And B. Is nonbeing possible?

Once you strip these two concepts down to their core questions, it is easy to see they are not so alien and strange at all. Any books that explore god and the afterlife on a meta level?
