How important is intelligence and knowledge to be a good author? A great author? Can a sub 100 write a masterpiece?

I don't read genre fic, not because I think I'm above it but because I've just never been interested enough, I plan to read Ubik, BotNS and Gormenghast but are the other three on this list worth a read?

Are there any books where the main character is clearly depressed but constantly gets pissed at himself whenever he thinks of himself like that because he doesn't want to be an attention seeking self diagnosing faggot and ultimately cannot truly know if what he has is depression or not because of the infinite gap between every single person?

Do Americans not have libraries? All this shit about stacks and trading in used books makes no sense to me - borrow it from the library, read it, and buy it if you want to reread it some day. Or maybe they have libraries you have to pay for or some shit like that
