I don't think a "commoner", or better said, a lower class person in the pre-ww2 times can live a good life with all the hardship he has to face just because he knows that it is good, and without having dogma enforced into his life to stop him from straying from the path of good, since I feel that hardship tempts you to be evil, even if you do it for good reason (Valjean stealing bread to feed his sister's children, for example).
