Thanks for the suggestions, I'll definitely check out some stuff from around the same period as Tolkien. The High House sounds interesting too.

Understood, and the gritty nature of ASOIAF definitely didn't turn me off, just more the deluge of plotlines and characters that makes it hard to follow unless you keep notes along the way. Or maybe I'm just not that good at comprehension, who knows. The grandiose worldbuilding I really liked though, which is another reason I think Discworld is interesting so far... silly as it is. Definitely true I've barely scratched the surface... is there something in recent fantasy that you'd recommend?
