/lit/ recomended me this piece of shit. You call yourselves patricians? This is the most overrated and nonsensical story I have ever read. Some faggot gets turned into an insect and dies? So DEEP

You are all a bunch of charlatans.

Discuss? Pretty good novella IMO, definitely 99% about Kafka's daddy issues and anti-capitalism

Sup, /lit/. I read Metamorphosis this morning, and found it pretty enjoyable. I don't quite understand why it's considered one of the greatest pieces of work ever though.

I got the whole dude wanted freedom, but had to take care of his family and they loved him for it, but when he actually got his freedom and the family had to work and care for him, they hated him for it. What else is there that makes it so special?

I've reread The Metamorphosis twice now, and I can't seem to find what it really stands for. There's no way it's just a book about a man turning into a bug and ruining his family's life, but I can't make out what it actually stands for. Help?

This book is so retarded. How did it become a classic?? It's about a guy who randomly wakes up and sees that he has turned into a cockroach over night. Yet, he is still set on catching the next train and going to work so he doesn't lose his job. What the heck?!!! How was he planning on working in his state. Like, people would think it was kind of weird if a random cockroach walked into their office.

Just finished this earlier today. I must say that it was a strange book but after reflection I really did not like it. I get the feeling I am missing something. Why were Gregors parents so cold and distant towards him? Why did they feel no remorse or sadness when he died?
Thoughts /lit/? Anyone have any insightful comments that can maybe enlighten me?

Read Kafka's Metamorphosis last night and couldn't stop thinking about how Gregor was going to violate and lay eggs inside of his sister. WTF is wrong with my brain?

[ERROR]

There are terriffying books that are supposed to be comforting in their implausibility. We read works like I Have no Mouth and I Must Scream with a tinge of apprehension, a dawning horror- but ultimately we can rest easy knowing that such fantasies must ever remain fantasies, that whatever flaws the world has, it is not malevolent but indifferent. However grisly my ultimate fate may be, being tortured into an expressionless blob by a psychopathic supercomputer just isn't in the realm of plausibility. Such horror stories are exercises of imagination, not philosophy; an aesthetic experiment of the worst thing we can imagine, not grappling with issues of pressing interest to humanity.

Metamorphosis should simply be the higher brow version of Harlon Ellison. It should simply have a more refined aesthetic vision of the concievable depths of human suffering, splayed out through Kafka's disdain for the society he's surrounded by. It shouldn't touch us, it should be an absurdity; which of us will really face turning into a cockroach?

It shouldn't be possible to wake up one day to have your ability to interact with your peers stripped from you, to be hurtled into a social position somewhere between object and burden. It shouldn't be possible for your capacity to communicate, to be understood, your speech, wrenched from you suddenly. But it is.

My aunt really did go to sleep one day and wake up a cockroach. Her body changed shape, her ability to talk to and laugh with those she loved fled her, and an unbridgable gulf erupted between her and the rest of humanity.

What books make you rage, /lit/?

Pic related. I get that Kafka was trying to get across a feeling of despair and hopelessness, but all his family's actions did was piss me off.

Book Review: The Metamorphisos by Franz Kafka

Pros
-Dynamic incorporation of prevailing psychological and psychoanalytical theories of the time
-The surrealist element of the Bug is both literal and highly symbolic; the symbolism covers so much ground (psychology, Marxism, Anti-Semitism, personal/domestic affairs, career station)
-Ingeniously describes how his metamorphosis is like major depressive disorder (loss of appetite, lethargy, apathy, prolonged sleep, insomnia, indecisiveness)
-Freudian elements related to mother and sister
-Creatively innovative and impressive
-Well-structured
-Occasional comic relief
-Riveting (no prolonged periods of dullness)
-Dynamic characters
-Fascinating descriptions of actions to emphasis an underlying idea/motive/thought ( [Paraphrased]Father would often unlock, open, and close one cupboard loudly. I later figured out that whenever he did this, he was doing the financing for the household by taking his banking papers out from the cupboard. He purposely made the racquet so I could hear from my bedroom and understand that that was what he was doing.)

Cons
-Melancholic and indecisive ending
