He has many other novels, but only these two are heavily discussed among the general population.
Do his other novels fail at being relevant to the times?

So which things in 1984 applied to the Soviet Union? I know of the secret police and the vaporizing, but did they actually spy on households?

Can we get a general dystopian future thread going?

I just finished Animal Farm, 1984, Brave New World, and for a bit of escapism, World War Z.

I've just read through 1984 again. Even knowing what would happen, I couldn't help but hope that somehow The Party and Big Brother would come crashing down. At the very least Winston and Julia could have made a dent. So, how could such a government as the one described in the book be brought down?

Heya, /lit/. I have a query:

When browsing the bookstore, I often seen dystopia/utopia novels such as:1984, brave new world, The island, We, ETC in the Literary fiction area of the bookstore instead of the science fiction section. When all of these books use a fantasized setting that's extremely important to the story, something I thought of as a hallmark of genre fiction.

Are they just afraid to say that not all genre fiction is pleb material, or am I missing something?

What does it say about us that pretty much every well-known vision of the future is a dystopia?
