Greetings. Not sure if this is an appropriate question but I don't see any stickies or FAQs for this board so I'll just get straight to it...

I have never been able to figure this out -- if I am writing an essay about a work of fiction in MLA format and I use quotes from the work to support various points, do I need to use parenthetical citations with those quotes?

It seems silly to cite the same work over and over. Not to mention, it's not like I am using the author's opinions about anything in my work -- I am expressing my opinion about their work.

By way of (a crummy) example,

When Akakiy's coworkers "laughed at and made fun of him, so far as their official wit permitted," (?) they were revealing their true opinions about...

Do I really need to replace (?) with (Gogol 5)?

What do you guys think of Gogol?
