>Our tyrant deserved his death for having made an exception of the one thing that was the blackest crime of all. Why do we gather instances of petty crime -- legacies criminally obtained and fraudulent buying and selling? Behold, here you have a man who was ambitious to be king of the Roman People and master of the whole world; and he achieved it! The man who maintains that such an ambition is morally right is a madman; for he justifies the destruction of law and liberty and thinks their hideous and detestable suppression glorious.

I would recommend 'The Will to Believe' by William James. It is mostly about religious faith, but it is far more generalisable. Sometimes the deciding factor of whether you can achieve something is precisely adopting the faith that you can, even if you lack all evidence for it. So whenever doubts arrest you, have the will to believe! faith, in yourself and others, can give you tremendous resolve in the face of hardship.

Optimist bordering on utopian here. You just need to stop being such an essentialist about human nature.

It was just lip service. One of Hobbes' main targets was the subjugation of the church to the state. This is readily apparent if you read Behemoth. I have an old effort post i could dig up and dump that is somewhat related if you want. He was fighting accusations of atheism at the time too. There's actually a pretty comical note in De Cive where he reluctantly justifies the King's duty to kill all atheists. It came off as a reaction against the accusations. He wasn't an atheist though.
