Where the fuck did I argue that there's a downward spiral occurring? I literally just said that populism may help change some systematic issues I dislike. If anything, it was an optimistic statement — a statement conflated with your notion of it because you say "populist" and failed to read further, evidently. Also, what's with all the labeling? The Tribal Appendange Hypothesis:
Where personhood can be mapped exactly to their prominent identities.

The Tribal Appendange Hypothesis relies chiefly on three ideas.
People are entirely the sum of their prominent tribal allegiences, aka identities
You can ascertain from these tribal allegiances the entire sum of a person's being, including their past, down to minute details.
If A and B are true, then it is also true that you can ascertain the future of people based on their tribal allegiances by discovering the pasts of people with identical prominent identies
Thus, the endless Data Harvesting we are witnessing has another utility. Once we have unlocked the ability to perfectly map the past of any individual and sufficiently guess at their future, we can start to abuse a deterministic reality for personal gain
We can accept that all of our actions are determined by either an Omnix3 deity or some other more material reasoning. At this point in time, we can do nothing with that information save resign ourselves to the futility of personal struggle and mental anguish that arises from being in a subpar situation.
However, once we can predict ours, or more realistically, once someone else can predict our paths, they can use this information as borderline precognition. If you can predict accurately the behavior of individuals, you can predict accurately the behavior of the collective. You can predict the whims of the stock market, the fall of nations, or future artistic or technical hotspots
Observing on an individual level has other benefits. The powers that be, who have either purchased this information or harnessed it themselves, will use this ability to map the future to pluck those who would threaten the status quo from reality
Once the behaviors of people can be accurately predicted, these people can be controlled without them noticing.
Because, unlike cosmic determinism, people are not garunteed to travel down the path that they are predicted to go down. These paths can be manipulated. If a man is likely to become a lone wolf terrorist, you can manipulate his surroundings so that his community is more welcoming and accepting of him

There's a quote from Land about his experiences. If I'm comfortably prevailing, he would be narrowly surviving in comparison:
