Not really. Maybe it wasn't the protestants, but during the Sengoku period there was an actual possibility of it being true. Christianity was at least thought of well among the lords and the West in general and western influence was seen as a way for them to gain power. Things didn't begin to settle until after Akechi and Nobunaga died, and even then the Shimabara rebellion was still 50+ years away.
