The concept of bracketing is a lucid metaphor for Husserl's method of reduction. Consider the epistemological project of phenomenology (what 'appears' in one's consciousness) and how it benefits from disregarding the elements that are not part of the intentional act of perception. Phenomenology does not cncern itself with questions such as whether you hallucinate an object or if it's 'there' before you (brain in a vat/man in a cave stuff). It disregards (bracket off) this information, because it cannot be obtained by your own (limited) consciousness.
