I want to write a book, either 19th century or pre-1960s. I'm afraid of it being terribly cliché. I don't want to write a modern novel because the period doesn't interest me.

I've been reading a lot of classic lit and have been trying to alter my writing style to fit the period which I want my novel to be set in but I'm afraid of people looking at my book and calling it an Oscar Wilde/Charles Dickens knock-off.
What should I do?

Trying to decide on a book to get my friend for Christmas.

I want to get a compilation of short stories I think, preferably by multiple authors. A book of necessary shorts is nice, like things everyone should read.

Got any recommendations?

Pretty large and comprehensive. However only issue is I have pretty much read all the stuff I can think of from the top of my head. No excuse really to run out of books, but simply I guess I want another faggy book recommendation thread.

Also maybe to freak out the librarian if its a bizarre set?

I spend too much money on books ergo I must start pirating. My flawless logic aside, I cannot afford a kindle or eReader yet I presume some people here actually read full books from their laptops. How the fuck can you do that?

I don't mean hurr durr how do you's torrents. I am trying to ask how do you have the patience to actually read a book entirely from a laptop and or monitor screen? Does it take some practice until it feels natural in some way?
