I'm the guy who you replied to in this post. I know exactly what you mean because I'm going through the same thing more or less. I moved abroad for higher studies and they've all joined jobs far away so I won't get to see them.

But more frighteningly, I don't seem to be passionate about the things I used to be about anymore. I don't enjoy most things with as much fierceness before and I'm afraid that the more this problem worsens, the deeper I will sink into that emptiness which at times leaves me in a horrid, deeply dis-satisfactory and alienated state.

For the first time I'm beginning to realize the dread that the emptiness induces when there are no distractions.

As an escape, I currently just listen to a fuckton of music and read literature. But it's just that: an escape.
I'm trying to explore some other hobbies and hopefully, a busy enough academic life in which I may or may not find a passion could prove useful.

The more I read the more I become aware of exactly how shitty discussions on this board are. I used to think people on this board have interesting perspectives but I'm gradually becoming disillusioned.

This thread is an example why. Apart from one or two posts no one has bothered to even come close to having a serious, interesting discussion of the stoics (despite there being so much to be said about their philosophy).

The retards railing against it here obviously haven't read any proper stoic work and instead of providing a well thought out critique of its flaws (and inconsistencies) which it certainly does have, there are only unsubstantiated shitposts and retarded bait.

Fucks sake. Does no one have anything to say about their concept of logos? About how they adhere to some sort of determinism and free will at the same time? About their values of justice, righteousness and pragmatism? About how it deals with indulgence and its contrast with epicurean and hedonist thought?

What a terrible thread. Stoicism is such an amazing, relatively simple and grounded school of thought yet people here seem to have such major misconceptions about it.

>passkey to trade your effort for the effort of the best among men

yeah i guess since money literally is designed as a more convenient method of the barter system which allows people to exchange commodities that were created through effort. More money implies buying things that command more money and therefore required better/more effort.

ok fair enough

>money is the creation of the best power within you

what now? "power within me"? is she implying that the amount of money i'm making is in proportion to how "internally powerful" I am? I'm genuinely curious. I don't understand this part. Can human worth be measured by how much money he's making? is that what she's suggesting? what dos she mean by "best power within you" ?

Can I ask you all a question /lit/ ?

I'm not sure if anyone else noticed this but if you did then let me know.

Does anyone here think that billy's narration was surprisingly dispassionate and factual? And instead of it making the book/events/story cold, it somehow added to the emotion and feel of the book? It added weight to the horror of war? Maybe it had something to do with reading about a naive, innocent person caught in the midst of all of it? and that instead of narrating it in a hamfisted manner that appeals to emotion, billy just told it as it is and let ourselves feel however we can about it?

Or am I wrong?

>why avoid sophistry?

Two reasons:
1. I can spend my time reading much better literature and there is only a finite number of books that I can read in my life. I'd rather spend that time on the best lit that there is, rather than reading sophist bullshit and critiquing it.

2. On some level, I'm afraid of that sophistry getting to me and inducing irrational thought. Although I believe that I have some ability of critical thought and analysis, I realize that even I'm vulnerable to sophistry at times.

i don't have any gripe against third wave feminism per se. I'm indifferent to it because it has not affected me in any perceivable manner yet. I just want to avoid the stuff that is so heavily decried about it.

>email moderator if TALKING about it is necessary. if I can sit back and passively observe or listen in a corner.
>moderator says ok, but beware of others who would urge you to speak.
>decide fuck it. will attend a meetup.
>it is on this sunday. first meetup i'm attending and theme is feminism.

Funny thing. Almost everyone in the online forum of this club types so enthusiastically replete with exclamation marks, friendly messags and smileys. Several posts similar to "Just finished book X. LOVED it!"

In such ridiculous contrast to this board where everyone is an embittered cynical asshole to everyone and hell bent on hating books read by others that it makes me question whether people here even like lit at all.
