Tips for understanding/enjoying the writings of The Beats?

I have read all of Burroughs and both of his biographies. best book is The Western Lands.

I understand WSB's constant use of "jissom," "cock," etc. as much as anybody can, but never understood how often he says "carbolic soap" this and "carbolic soap" that.

I went through the same thing, I think, but mine was Burroughs. I read everything he'd written, thought about Burroughs in a sorta W.W.W.S.B.D. way that I hated but could hardly help because I admired (and still admire) him so much. this lasted for at least a couple years. it happens when I get "into" any author, but it was only that intense with him, for that period.

not the worst thing that can happen, although you start to wonder how much are you trying to be the guy and how much of it is just you relating to him.

after I got over the obsessive period, I felt like I could respect him in a normal way like a regular human being, and I took away some important lessons that are too much to go into right now.
