Of course there are still plenty of problems, but they're nothing compared to the rest of the world.

I hereby propose that the Fins, Swedes, Norwegians, Dutch, Flemish, Luxembourgians, Danes, Germans, Austrians, Swiss and perhaps the Lichtensteinians form a new union.

West Germanic is the branch of languages that include English, Dutch, German, Frisian et cetera. English can't be based of a category it belongs too. Just like Belgium isn't based on Western Europe. It is part of it.

This should be very simple logic. I am not based on my family. An apple isn't based on fruit. A lizard isn't based on reptiles. A shiitake isn't based on mushrooms.

If anything, the mentioned languages share a common ancestor in a proto-Germanic language. West Germanic is in no way a singular language that functions as a predecessor, it is a label ascribed in retrospect to a bunch of languages that hold similar characteristics.
