Somehow, the more heavily annotated they are, the less it feels like vandalism because it shows (perhaps) the greater attempt to engage with the wor. I understand where you're coming from though. Most of what I run across in the wild is more along the lines of the "for Bob, Christmas 1982! Love from Sue!" school of commentary. On the other hand, when Bob and Sue have both been dead for 200 years maybe that'll be heartbreaking too.
