Stopped with boyish crushes after going on a few dates in my twenties after being completely repressed from doing so in my teens.
I've always been kind of emotionally retarded and/or idiosyncratic but I'm above average in looks which managed to get me the attention of a few women. When I say attention, I mean exactly that and nothing more. I've probably had ten or fifteen first dates that never resulted in a second. I didn't lose my virginity until I was 22.
I primarily attribute this to the scarcity of adept conversationalism. Most people do not talk, or rather, most people do not speak. They don't impart conjecture over things they're passionate about and things they contemplate the way that a website like 4chan would train you to be able to do.
Most people do not *do* anything, and the ones that do pursue creative endeavors for purposes of social self-obsession without any mind to what they do or why they do it.
It may have seemed at the time like I was interviewing these poor girls that were unfortunate enough to have given me the time of day (I was very particular that every first date would allow us the opportunity to talk without any inhibiting factors, usually coffee) because I really was.
The next time you catch yourself mooning over a cutie you see in the hallways at university or a pretty woman that works in adjacent offices that you think you have a crush on, just imagine the probable labor of explaining the book you're reading and why you like it if she was ever to grace you with the beckoning of a passing glimpse.
