Eye of the World is a far better book on reread because you realize how much stuff had been planned out in advance in it. For first time readers though, it's just another derivative fantasy novel until the very end when the big reveal is done.

The actual plot starts in book 2. Books 2-5 are generally considered to be the peak of the series. There's some good moments after that, but it's starts to slog until Sanderson picks it up.

Has anyone here read the Wheel of Time? It's on all the recommended lists for fantasy. But I don't think anyone actually reads this thing.

If you have, what were your favorite characters? And how do you feel about the power dynamics of men and women relationships. That seemed to be a huge theme throughout the books. Men and women trading power back and forth. Sometimes women trading power with other women, and men with other men. In fact, this whole book was just one big S&M fantasy.

>She gave a start.
>Nynaeve tugged at her braid.
>"Men..."
>She sniffed.
>"Wooled headed men."
>[Three paragraphs detailing dresses magically shifting back and forth]
>"I should box your ears."
>He snorted
>"There's no point trying to understand women"
>He fingered the hilt of his sword.
>Two Rivers folk are more stubborn than a mule.
>"The wheel weaves, as the wheel wills."
>She stared levelly, with that cool Aes Sedai gaze.
>The agelessness of an Aes Sedai.
>Spots colored his cheeks.
>Before he realized what he was doing, he has unsheathed his sword.
>Siuan Sanche: [Fishing reference]

I started this series, because it's on every recommendation list. Now I'm 9 books in, and questioning if I should continue. Every chapter reuses the same phrases. They just get jumbled about. These are only the ones I can recall top of mind. But he has a few dozen more stock phrases.

Also, it dawned on me about 4 books ago, that this guy is just writing about his fetishes. Some light bondage, a shit load of Dom/sub stuff, and what I can only think to describe as harem anime.

It's getting more repetitive and fetishistic the deeper I go. I was going to recommend this to a friend, but now I'm reconsidering, because it's honestly embarrassing how much of this is straight up fetish fuel. Strung together by ham-fisted references to Japanese culture, that would make a weeaboo angry.

I would ask if it gets any better, but I don't want to encourage you to lie to me.
