it can't possibly be worse than knowing nobody will show up to your funeral

I recently graduated and I'm still working my college job at a call center. We can read between calls, and there are certain times during the day when call volume predictably drops, so I can usually get a little in then. Otherwise, I sometimes read in the morning and sometimes before bed depending on when I'm working, and on my days off. I'm currently applying to teaching jobs though now that I'm certified, so in that case I guess I'd have all summer and winter vacation to read. Also I'll probably keep reading before bed.

It's pretty straight forward. Guthelu is really just elaborating on the age old idea that "Ignorance is Bliss". Essentially, in our current post-modern condition (namely widespread communication/global community/unhampered access to information) man is exposed on a constant basis to the unpleasant and negative. While one could choose to avoid such content, we've been conditioned to instead conform to it. We're basically addicted to suffering at this point. The human mind copes with this by "unlearning" the ideas that make these things negative and "reassociate" them into their worldview. Ergo, the theory of Regression to Positivism is more or less how we adapt our views to conform to our environment and avoid the unpleasantness of cognitive dissonance. I'd recommend Heckles' "Buffoonery: Remaking of the Modern Mind" for a more skilled breakdown of the topic.
